Feed restriction inhibits early follicular development in young broiler-breeder hens

چکیده

Ad libitum feeding causes excessive follicular development and is associated with extensive metabolic changes in broiler-breeder hens. Restricting feed intake reduces excessive follicular development, but the mechanisms mediating this response are unknown. In the present study, the effects of feeding on follicular development in immature broiler-breeder hens were examined. There was an increase in the proportion of follicles 100-300, 300-500 and >500 μm in diameter and a decrease in follicles <100 μm in full-fed (FF) compared to restricted-fed (RF) hens. Increased follicular development in FF hens was associated with a greater expression of steroidogenic transcripts (STAR, CYP11A1, HSD3B, and CYP19) within the ovarian cortex of FF hens. These transcripts represent markers of more advanced follicular development. However, increased follicular development in FF hens was not associated with changes in the expression of other factors previously implicated in follicular development, including those encoding TGF-beta ligands (AMH, BMP6, BMP15, or GDF9) or their signaling proteins (SMAD2/3 or SMAD1/5/9). Changes in histone modifications associated with proliferation, including trimethylated histone H3K4, trimethylated histone H3K27, and acetylated histone H3K9, were also not different between treatment groups. However, feed restriction caused serine phosphorylation to localize strongly to the ovarian stroma of FF hens compared to RF hens. In contrast, phosphorylation of tyrosine residues localized more prominently to the surface of granulosa cells from RF hens. Thus, restricted feeding may enhance the efficiency of reproduction by suppressing early follicular development which is associated with changes in granulosa cell protein phosphorylation status.

Leptin receptor in the chicken ovary: potential involvement in ovarian dysfunction of ad libitum-fed broiler breeder hens

In hens, the ovarian follicles committed to ovulation are arranged in an ordered follicular hierarchy. In standard broiler breeders hens genetically selected for high growth rate the reproductive function is clearly dysfunctional. Feed restriction is needed during reproductive development to limit the formation of excessive numbers of ovarian yellow follicles arranged in multiple hierarchies. T...

Effects of fenfluramine on body weight, feed intake, and reproductive activities of broiler breeder hens.

Inherited overfeeding and fattiness reduce laying performance in broiler breeder pullets. Although feed restriction is used to compensate for overeating and weight gain, this management practice leads to increases in BW variation, labor cost, and bird stress. Dietary supplementation of anorectic agents, such as fenfluramine, may be an alternative. Anak female prebreeder hens (19 wk of age; n = ...

Feed restriction of turkey breeder hens--a review.

Past research on feed restriction methods with turkey breeder hens has involved the feeding of 1) high-fiber or low-energy diets, 2) low dietary protein, 3) limited quantities of feed, 4) rations on a skip-a-day program, 5) distasteful compounds, or 6) combinations of these methods. In general, feed-restricted turkey breeder hens showed a reduction in BW and a delay in sexual maturity at time o...

Overfeeding-induced ovarian dysfunction in broiler breeder hens is associated with lipotoxicity.

In mammals, triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation in nonadipose tissue, termed lipotoxicity, develops with obesity and can provoke insulin resistance, overt diabetes, and ovarian dysfunction. Leptin, an adipose tissue hormone, may mediate these effects. Feed-satiated broiler breeder hens manifest lipotoxicity-like symptoms. Changes in body and organ weights, hepatic and plasma TAG, nonesterified f...

Environment and Management III

The effects of environmental temperature (ET) and dietary ME on core body temperature (CBT) and production efficiency were evaluated in broiler breeder hens. A total of 192 Ross 708 broiler breeder hens were individually caged in one of 6 temperature-controlled chambers (32/room) at 20 wk of age. A biotelemetry sensor was surgically implanted abdominally to measure CBT of 8 birds/tmt every 10 m...
